Description

In War of the Ring, one player takes control of the Free Peoples (FP) while the other player commands the Shadow Armies (SA). Initially, the Free People Nations are hesitant to wage war against Sauron and must either be attacked by Sauron or persuaded by Gandalf or other Companions before they fully engage in battle. This is represented by the Political Track, which indicates whether a Nation is prepared to fight in the War of the Ring or not.

The game can be won through a military victory if Sauron conquers a specific number of Free People cities and strongholds, or vice versa. However, the true hope for the Free Peoples lies in the quest of the Ringbearer, who is attempting to secretly reach Mount Doom to destroy the One Ring. Unaware of his enemies' true intentions, Sauron searches Middle Earth for the precious Ring, subjecting the Fellowship of the Ring to numerous dangers, as represented by The Hunt for the Ring rules. The Companions can also encourage the Free Peoples to fight against Sauron, so the Free People player must strike a balance between protecting the Ringbearer and mounting a proper defense against the Shadow armies to prevent them from overrunning Middle Earth before the Ringbearer completes his quest.

Each game turn is centered around the roll of Action Dice, with each die corresponding to an action a player can perform during their turn. Depending on the face rolled on each die, various actions are possible, such as moving armies, characters, recruiting troops, and advancing on the Political Track.

Action Dice can also be used to draw or play Event Cards, which represent specific events from the story (or potential events) that cannot be depicted through regular gameplay. Each Event Card can introduce an unexpected twist in the game, allowing for special actions or altering the course of a battle.

War of the Ring is a strategic and immersive board game that challenges players to navigate the complex dynamics of Middle Earth, balancing military conquest, political intrigue, and the perilous quest of the Ringbearer.
