Description

Stratego is a classic game of strategy and skill, where your goal is to protect your flag and capture your opponent's flag. Place your pieces, bombs, and flag on the gameboard and strategize a defense as well as offense. When your pieces are one space away from an enemy, attack and declare ranks, and the lower-ranking man is captured. Take caution when attacking, as you could be met with a bomb that would take your man out of play. The first to capture an enemy flag is the winner!

How to Play

Stratego is a classic board game of strategy and deception, where the objective is to capture your opponent's flag. The game is played on a 10x10 grid, and each player has 40 pieces with varying ranks, each with its own strengths and weaknesses.

Here's a step-by-step guide on how to play:

Display More

Setup:

  1. Each player gets 40 pieces, which include different ranks of officers, scouts, miners, spies, bombs, and a flag. The ranks of the pieces are as follows: 1 (Spy), 2 (Scout), 3 (Miner), 4 (Sergeant), 5 (Lieutenant), 6 (Captain), 7 (Major), 8 (Colonel), 9 (General), 10 (Marshal), Bomb, and Flag.
  2. Both players set up their pieces on their side of the board (4 rows of 10). The players are free to arrange their pieces however they like. The pieces should be placed in such a way that the opposing player cannot see their ranks. The only exception is the bombs and the flag, which cannot be moved once the game starts.
  3. There are two lakes in the center of the board (2x2 squares) where no piece can move.

Gameplay:

  1. Players decide who goes first. After the first player is determined, players alternate turns.
  2. During a turn, a player can move one piece, one square at a time, either forward, backward, or sideways, but not diagonally.
  3. If a player moves onto a square occupied by an opponent's piece, they attack. When an attack happens, both players reveal the ranks of their pieces.
  4. The piece with the lower rank is removed from the board. If the pieces have the same rank, both are removed.
  5. Special rules:
  6. The game continues until one player attacks the square containing the opponent's flag, thus capturing it. The player who captures the opponent's flag wins the game.

Strategies:

  1. It is generally a good strategy to protect your flag well, often with bombs and high-ranking pieces.
  2. Using your Scout (rank 2) to probe enemy lines can be helpful, as they can move any number of squares in a straight line, unlike other pieces which can only move one square at a time.
  3. Try to remember the pieces your opponent has lost, as it will give you an idea of what pieces they might still have in play.

Remember, deception is a crucial part of Stratego. Misleading your opponent about the location of your flag and the strength of your pieces can lead you to victory. Happy gaming!
