Description

Raiders of the North Sea is set during the central years of the Viking Age. As Viking warriors, players aim to impress the Chieftain by raiding unsuspecting settlements. To accomplish this, players must assemble a crew, gather provisions, and journey north to pillage gold, iron, and livestock. Glory can be found in battle, even at the hands of the Valkyrie, so gather your warriors because it's raiding season!

To impress the Chieftain, you need victory points (VPs), which are acquired primarily by raiding settlements, taking plunder, and making offerings to the Chieftain. How you use your plunder is also crucial to your success. Players take turns in clockwise order, and on a turn, you place a worker and resolve its action, then pick up a different worker and resolve its action. Broadly speaking, those actions fall into one of two categories:

Work: Having a reliable crew and enough provisions are essential for successful raiding, so players must first prepare their crew and gather supplies before embarking on raids. This is all done in the village at the bottom of the game board, with eight buildings offering various actions. You must first place your worker in an available building where no other worker is present, then pick up a different worker from a different building. Raid: Once players have hired enough crew and collected provisions, they may choose to raid on their turn. To raid a settlement — whether a harbor, outpost, monastery, or fortress — you need to meet three requirements: having a large enough crew, having enough provisions (along with gold for monasteries and fortresses), and having a worker of the right color. Raiding offers various ways of scoring, such as military strength, plunder, and Valkyries, which is how grey and white workers enter the game. The game ends when only one fortress raid remains, all Valkyrie have been removed, or all offerings have been made. Players then tally their scores.

Raiders of the North Sea: How to Play Guide

Raiders of the North Sea is a strategic board game where players, as Viking warriors, aim to impress the Chieftain by raiding settlements, collecting plunder, and making offerings. Setup:

  1. Place the game board at the center of the playing area.
  2. Shuffle the 71 Townsfolk Cards into a deck, create a Discard Pile, and place both within reach.
  3. Shuffle the 16 Offering Tiles, place them facedown, and reveal the top three tiles.
  4. Fill the Black Bag with Valkyrie and Plunder, draw and place the required number for each raiding space, and set aside the remaining pieces.
  5. Place White and Grey Workers on their required raiding spaces, and Black Workers in the Village (Gate House, Town Hall, and Treasury).
  6. Place Silver and Provisions in the Main Supply, along with the dice.
  7. Give each player 2 Silver, 1 Black Worker, and 1 Ship Card in their chosen color.
  8. Place a Score Marker for each player on the '0' spaces of the board's edge.
  9. Remove unused components from the play area.
  10. Deal 5 Townsfolk Cards to each player; players keep 3 and discard the other 2.
  11. Roll the dice to determine the starting player.

Turn Structure:
Each turn, players can either Work or Raid, and always follow this pattern:

  1. Place a Worker and resolve its action.
  2. Pick up a different Worker and resolve its action.

Working:
Players prepare their Crew and collect supplies by working in the Village. They place their Worker in an available building and resolve the building's action. Then, they pick up a different Worker and resolve its action.

Raiding:
Once players have enough Crew and Provisions, they may raid. To raid a Settlement, players must have a large enough Crew, enough Provisions (and Gold for Monasteries/Fortresses), and the required Worker color.

Raiding steps:

  1. Place the Worker on a Settlement's Worker Spot.
  2. Pay required Provisions and Gold.
  3. Roll dice, add total Military Strength, and determine Victory Points gained.
  4. Receive additional Victory Points from Hired Crew.
  5. Pick up the new Worker and Plunder.
  6. Resolve Valkyrie actions.

Scoring Raids:
Victory Points are earned through Military Strength, Hired Crew, and Plunder/Valkyrie.

Game End:
The game ends when one of the following occurs:

  1. Only one Fortress raid remains.
  2. The Offering Draw Pile is empty.
  3. No Valkyrie are left on the board.

Each player, including the current player, takes one final turn before the game ends. The player with the most Victory Points wins.
