Description

The Quest for El Dorado: Heroes & Hexes expansion introduces three new double-sided terrain tiles, adding curses as a fresh game element. When a player lands on a demon space, they must draw and reveal a curse token to determine its effects. Curses may force players to discard specific cards before traversing certain terrain types, cause other explorers to move while the cursed player is immobilized, or inflict players with a demon card that either frustrates them or transforms into a half-coin each time it appears.

Despite the negative consequences, players may choose to visit demonic locations for various reasons. Not only is moving to a demon space card-free, but some demon spaces also contain tunnels, allowing direct movement between hexes on the same tile. Players must decide whether the free movement is worth the potential repercussions. The expansion also includes two demon-symbol blockades; the first player to break through such a blockade must endure the subsequent curse.

To incorporate this expansion, players must use the "Caves" variant of The Quest for El Dorado base game, which features cave tokens on mountains. The expansion adds new cave tokens to be mixed with the base game tokens and four new types of expedition cards (with three copies each) to be added to the market once a stall is available.

Each player begins the game with a randomly dealt familiar in their deck, possessing a recurring power

and a one-time bonus power. For an additional way to enhance your deck, you can visit one of the three tavern spaces in the game. When you do this, you draw the top three hero cards from the ten-card deck, place one of those heroes in your hand (which then becomes a regular part of your deck), and shuffle the other two heroes back into the deck. Remember, only one hero per adventuring party is allowed!

The expansion includes six suggested map setups, all at medium or hard difficulty levels and featuring the three new terrain tiles. Additionally, guidelines are provided for creating custom maps.

In summary, The Quest for El Dorado: Heroes & Hexes expansion adds new challenges and strategic elements to the base game, including curses, familiars with unique powers, hero cards, and a variety of map setups. Players must navigate these new obstacles and weigh the risks and rewards of their decisions to successfully complete their quest for El Dorado.
