Here is France as a schoolroom would have seen it in 1925, with the land coloured by height: soft greens for the plains, yellows and oranges climbing into the Massif Central, and deep russet for the Alps and the Pyrenees. Corsica sits in its own little inset at the bottom right, beside the key.
It's an old Larousse map, printed with the original French lettering. The Channel, the Atlantic and the Mediterranean frame the country in pale blue-grey, and the cream paper margin gives it the look of a page taken from a well-loved atlas. Where would you travel first?
The muted, similar greens and yellows across the plains and the fine, tiny place-name lettering give few clear landmarks, though the orange mountain regions and the sea edges help.
