How to Play

Hocus Pocus: The Game Overview

Hocus Pocus is a cooperative game based on the Disney movie where players work together to ruin the Sanderson sisters' potion by playing ingredients into the cauldron. Players must stun a witch three times to win, but if the ingredient deck runs out before that, they lose.

Ages: 8+
Players: 2-6
Time: 30 minutes

Setup:

  1. Place the Cauldron board in the center of the play area, with the Witch board to one side.
  2. Set the Trick tokens, Binx mover, Sun token, and Stun token nearby.
  3. Shuffle the Ingredient cards and deal a starting hand to each player, depending on the number of players.
  4. Shuffle the Spell cards and place them facedown next to the Witch board.
  5. Place the remaining Ingredients facedown next to the Cauldron.
  6. The player who most recently lit a candle goes first.

Playing the Game:
Players take turns, following this order:

  1. Play one Ingredient card from their hand onto one of the five piles in the Cauldron, matching the color or type of the top Ingredient in that pile.
  2. Draw one Ingredient from the top of the Ingredient deck.

Players must keep their cards secret from others and cannot share information unless instructed to do so. If the top card of all five piles in the Cauldron match, by color or by type, a witch is stunned, and the round ends.

Special Ingredients:

  • Binx: Allows a player to play with their hand revealed.
  • Spell Book: Forces the witches to cast a Spell.

Spells:

  • Drawn when an Ingredient with a Spell Book symbol is played or when a player cannot play an Ingredient.
  • If a witch is stunned, the Spell misses and is discarded.

Trick Tokens:
Each Trick token can be used only once per game. The tricks include:

  • Circle of Salt: Ignore a drawn Spell.
  • Daylight Savings Time: Swap one Ingredient with another player.
  • Billy Butcherson: Skip playing an Ingredient on your turn.
  • Burning Rain of Death: Discard three Ingredients and draw three new ones.

Stunning a Witch:
When a witch is stunned, the Sun token moves up one space. Stun a witch three times to win the game.

Ending the Game:

  • If the Sun token reaches the top space, players win.
  • If the Ingredient deck runs out before stunning a witch three times, players lose.
